Short Course in Global Trade Analysis :: Course Objectives

Refresher Course
As interest in the GTAP framework expands, short course participants are becoming increasingly diverse. Many do not have prior background in applied general equilibrium (AGE) analysis. Even those with some background in this area often find that they wished they had a bit more prior to the start of the intensive short course.

The objective of these preparatory modules is to cover key features of AGE analysis in advance of the course. In particular, we will analyze behavior of firms, households and markets in the context of a one region model. Extension to multiple regions and trade in the short course is then straightforward. By working through this material in advance of the on-site course, all participants will become familiar with the standard GTAP notation and software. For those individuals who do not have a background in applied general equilibrium analysis, these modules also offer necessary background for the course.

What to Expect?
The course is divided into weekly modules. Each module offers a series of lectures, either lecture notes, or narrated presentations.

The lectures are designed to introduce a module's key concepts. In addition to lectures, participants are required to go through a series of hands-on simulations. These are usually short movies walking the user through typical analyses using the GTAP utilities available in the course. These simulations prepare participants to complete a weekly homework assignment. Finally, every module ends with a study guide aimed at helping participants assess what they have learned over the week. Every week, participants are also given a list of required and supplementary readings.

The course was designed to be taken online with a companion DVD. We require participants to submit weekly homework assignments electronically.

The central tool for learning in this course will be weekly homework assignments designed to reinforce the material covered in the lectures. This will be supplemented with weekly discussions on the bulletin board via email.
